World Asthma Day: Asthma in children – often undetected, often not treated properly

Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease in children. It is a disease whose symptoms can become more burdensome as the pollen season gets longer due to climate change.

On the occasion of World Asthma Day, the experts of the Austrian Society of Pneumology (ÖGP) emphasise the importance of the correct and earliest possible diagnosis and treatment of childhood asthma. Results of the LEAD study, Austria’s largest epidemiological observational study on lung health to date, show that the occurrence of lowered lung function values in children and adolescents are associated with the occurrence of allergy-related characteristics by means of skin allergy testing and the presence of chronic lung diseases such as asthma.
